A correct address before it reaches your systems

When someone places an order, creates an account or makes a booking, they do not always type a complete address. Woosmap offers them the relevant results from the first few characters, then hands your application a structured address, ready to use.

The Localities API plugs into a form, a search field or a map, on the web and in mobile apps.

Address autocomplete

When an incomplete address travels through your systems

Someone filling in an address wants to finish what they came to do. They may abbreviate, drop an apostrophe, stop halfway through a street name, or remember only half the postcode. A free-text field accepts all of it without raising anything.

What your system receives is unstructured input. It may be incomplete, ambiguous, or simply hard to use as it stands: before a delivery, an eligibility check or a customer record can rely on it, it often has to be completed, corrected, or split into street, town, postcode and coordinates. The work then happens after the fact, when picking the right address during input would have prevented the correction.

An address typed as 221B Bak is accepted unfinished, then flagged incomplete, ambiguous and unstructured as it reaches delivery, customer data and operations

From the first character to a stored address

Four moments, from the input field to your database.

  1. The customer starts typing

They type the first characters into your address field, as in any other form. They stay in that one field, with no need to fill in street, town and postcode separately.

  2. /autocomplete

Woosmap offers the addresses that match

Autocomplete returns up to 5 suggestions for the text entered, sorted by relevance. It matches on full words and on substrings, and it recognises common abbreviations and apostrophes, so relevant suggestions appear before they have finished typing.

  3. The customer picks the right address

They select a suggestion from the list. That gesture, not the typing, is what settles the address.

  4. /details

Your application receives the complete address

Details returns the formatted address, its structured components and the coordinates with their accuracy level. Your form distributes them across its fields in a single action, and your business systems receive usable data rather than text to rework.

Three journeys where a reliable address is decisive

Three journeys whose outcome depends on the quality of the address you stored.

Checkout and delivery

a delivery address chosen from a suggestion is stored in a structured form rather than as free text.

Account creation

an address chosen at sign-up cuts down on later corrections and re-entry in the account.

Eligibility and booking

confirm that an address falls inside the area you serve, or obtain the complete address the booking depends on.

What Woosmap brings to that journey

Relevant suggestions from the first characters

The search covers addresses, towns and cities, postcodes, airports and other place types. You can restrict it to the countries you operate in.

A complete address, and its components separated

Details returns the formatted address, its structured components and the coordinates with their accuracy level. That accuracy comes in four levels, from the rooftop of a building down to the city, and in the UK and Ireland a postcode can return the list of addresses it contains.

UK addresses, from the Royal Mail datasets

30 million addresses from the Royal Mail PAF and MR datasets, searchable by the name or number of a building and of premises, at flat level accuracy and associated with the UK's 1.8 million postcodes. Default location accuracy for UK addresses is rooftop, with documented regional variations: Northern Ireland at postcode accuracy, Crown dependencies at postcode or district accuracy, and Not Yet Built addresses at postcode or district accuracy. Postcode search covers the United Kingdom on 7 characters and the Republic of Ireland on 3 digits, useful if you trade across both territories.

Reducing input errors and manual corrections

"Woosmap helps us reduce customer address input errors which would require lengthy manual fixes or costly shipping errors."

For your engineering team

Two calls are enough to wire the journey above.

The two calls, in this order

GET https://api.woosmap.com/localities/autocomplete/ suggests, and GET https://api.woosmap.com/localities/details completes. Autocomplete responses are for display purposes only: you must call the Details endpoint to get complete address data before storing, processing or displaying a location as a final result.

Keys, depending on where you call from

Client side requests use a public key, which requires domain or IP restrictions. Server side requests use a private_key, or the X-Api-Key header.

The parameter people forget

Addresses are not included in the default results: set types=address to autocomplete them. components=country: restricts the search to the countries you name.

A debounce on the input

To keep request volumes under control and adapt to how quickly customers type, add a debounce to the input.

GET https://api.woosmap.com/localities/autocomplete/?input=high+street&types=address&components=country:gb&key=YOUR_API_KEY

GET https://api.woosmap.com/localities/details?public_id=PUBLIC_ID_FROM_STEP_1&key=YOUR_API_KEY

Take a public_id from the first response and pass it to the second: you get the list of suggestions, then the complete address with its address_components and its geometry.

Free plan

Enough to wire the journey and test it, with no credit card.

  • 10,000 free API requests per month
  • Localities included
  • Autocomplete requests count towards that allowance

UK and Ireland addresses require a specific product activation, available on the Pro and Enterprise plans, and they are billed on SKUs of their own: Localities Geocode Address UK and Localities IE Addresses. Amounts and detailed tiers are on the pricing page: Autocomplete pricing · Details pricing · UK addresses pricing · Ireland addresses pricing

Questions we get

Woosmap does not retain the addresses entered or the suggestions selected after responding to the request. Our data processing agreement carries the contractual terms.

No. The Localities address database is not linked to names, surnames or phone numbers, so an address cannot be retrieved from a person.

The current product is the Localities API. The Address API is being deprecated across all subscriptions: use Localities for up to date address data, support and the improvements made to address search.

Yes, the Localities documentation publishes one: migration guide.

A 99.9% SLA is part of the Enterprise plan. The pricing page lists what each plan carries.

Yes. Woosmap can also be bought through the AWS Marketplace, which consolidates the subscription into your existing AWS invoice.
